Although the Fitzroy River looked like a lazy little stream as we checked into our humble abode on the bank just at sunset,  a trip upriver the next day quickly showed a different personality.  The steep walls of the Fitzroy Gorge, colored and carved by the annual cycle of flood and drought, create a long chute from which the water explodes onto the plains with destructive force.  No wonder there are few permanent structures.
