| Wild fires were an everyday occurrence along
the northern rim of the desert-dry Outback. In the remote
wilderness, little is -- little can be -- done to contain them or
prevent them. They simply burn until a treeless, grrassless area
stops them. With the rainy season still weeks away during our drive in
that part of Western Australia, we passed miles of destroyed
grasslands. The picture above shows a ring of wild fires in
the mountains that contain Lake Argyle, the huge government-built
irrigation lake for the Kununurra area. |
