Wild fires were an everyday occurrence along the northern rim of the desert-dry Outback.  In the remote wilderness, little is -- little can be -- done to contain them or prevent them.  They simply burn until a treeless, grrassless area stops them. With the rainy season still weeks away during our drive in that part of Western Australia, we passed miles of destroyed grasslands.   The picture above shows a ring of wild fires in the mountains that contain Lake Argyle, the huge government-built irrigation lake for the Kununurra area.
Bruce, our guide in the Bungle Bungle, called in these fires we came upon in the national wilderness area.  But there was little hope anyone could even get close with enough water to keep them from spreading.

But even fire can't keep the gorgeous Australian sunsets from shining through.
