Those of you who have followed our travels know that since visiting Labrador in 2007 we have built an inukshuk somewhere in each remote place we visit. In Labrador, the inukshuk is a carin given human form by the Inuits to denote friendliness and safety, his arms pointing the direction the builders have gone. In Greenland, we built our stone friend outside of Ilulissat on a rocky shore overlooking the ice fjord. He was small, but sturdy, and we hope he gives future visitors a smile as they travel inside the Arctic Circle. |
