Battle Harbour

The Battle Harbour "fish premises", on an island 45 minutes off the Labrador coast,  was established by an enterprising English company in 1775.  The tiny community became a major center for the cod, seal and salmon fisheries. It was the commercial trading headquarters and unofficial capital of Labrador until it's demise in the 1950s.  It is now owned by families of the former fishermen and others who manage it as an historic trust, a reminder of a remote and peaceful -- though hard and demanding -- lifestyle that no longer exists.

The fish processing building is reflected in the quiet waters of the harbor.

This is a good view of the fish flake -- a wooden platform where cod were laid out to dry.
